Before a price ever gets said out loud, the back panel comes off. A vintage tube amp with a 60-cycle hum sitting on the bench tells the counter almost nothing until someone opens the chassis. That is where the real story lives · not in the knobs, not in the tolex, but in the guts wired between the tubes and the transformer.
Fresh solder gives it away in one glance
Old solder joints go dull and grey over decades, almost chalky looking under a work light. New solder is shiny, rounded, almost wet-looking even when it is bone dry. If half the joints on the circuit board look freshly poured and the other half look original, someone has been in there recently · and the counter wants to know why. A full recap job leaves a trail of bright silver blobs clustered around the power supply section, right where the old filter caps used to sit.
The caps themselves tell their own age
Original filter capacitors in a decades-old amp are usually big cardboard-wrapped cylinders, sometimes with a wax paper look, often printed with a date code from the same era as the amp. Replacement caps are smaller, shinier, often a different brand entirely, sometimes a completely different color. A tube amp with a hum that persists even after a recap usually means the job only replaced the easy caps and skipped the harder ones buried near the rectifier. That half-finished pattern is one of the fastest tells in the whole inspection.
What speeds the decision
Matched cap brands, tidy trimmed leads, and solder joints that all look the same age move things along fast. It signals a tech did the whole job in one sitting instead of someone patching in a single cap to quiet a buzz and calling it done. What slows it down
Scorch marks around a resistor, a burnt smell near the power tubes, or solder blobs bridging two points that should never touch · these turn a five-minute look into a longer conversation. So does a tube amp with a hum that shows up only after warm-up, since that can point to a bias problem the recap never touched. Missing tubes, mismatched tube brands, or a socket with bent pins all add time too, because now the counter has to price in a repair instead of just confirming one.
What raises or lowers the number
A clean, complete recap with consistent solder work raises the offer because it means fewer surprises down the road and a shorter path to resale. A rushed, partial job lowers it, even if the amp powers on fine right now, because a partial fix on an old amp usually means more caps are close to failing. Noise problems hit harder than almost anything else in this category · a great-sounding amp with a persistent hum gets priced like a project, not a finished piece, no matter how nice the cabinet looks.
One quick check before any of this matters
Plug it in, run through every channel, and listen for hum or crackle before anyone even talks about the capacitors. If the amp stays quiet clean and dirty, on every channel, the recap conversation becomes a bonus detail instead of a dealbreaker. Bring the amp warmed up if possible, since some hum only shows up after ten minutes of use, and that single detail changes the whole conversation at the counter.
