
The Yellow Ghost Hiding Under White Gold's Shine
The half-moon of yellow nobody notices

Look at the inner curve of an old white gold wedding band, right where it rubs against the finger. A faint yellow crescent often shows through there, thin as a fingernail moon, easy to miss under regular light. That crescent is not tarnish and it is not dirt. It is the base alloy peeking out from under a rhodium coating that has worn thin from years of contact with skin, soap, and rings knocking against each other in a jewelry box.
Rhodium plating is a bright white metal layer applied over white gold to make it look icy and bright instead of its natural, slightly warmer tone. The layer is thin, often less than a micron, roughly the thickness of a soap bubble skin. Wear it down in the right spot and the true color of the gold underneath shows itself.
What the scratch tells that the shine won't
Run a thumbnail across a rhodium-plated surface next to a bare gold edge and the difference is obvious. The plated area feels glassy and slick. The worn patch feels grippier, almost matte, because rhodium is harder and reflects light differently than the softer gold alloy underneath. That texture change matters more than it seems · a shiny, unblemished white gold piece can hide the real story of what metal sits beneath the coating.
A scratch test done on an untouched, fully plated surface can return a misleading reading, since the file barely nicks the rhodium layer and the metal underneath never gets sampled. A proper read needs a spot where the plating is already thin or worn away. That is exactly why the little yellow crescent inside the band is useful rather than embarrassing.
The stamp that plating can't erase
Inside most bands sits a tiny stamp, something like 14K WG or 585, pressed into the metal before the rhodium ever went on. That stamp survives the plating process because it was struck into the base alloy itself, not painted over it. Why the shine adds nothing to the number

The coating is so thin that its actual weight rounds down to nearly nothing on a jeweler's scale. A ring weighing 5.4 grams weighs 5.4 grams whether the rhodium is fresh from the plater or worn through to bare metal underneath. The floor value comes from the base gold weight and karat, not from how bright the piece looks under the lamp.
That is also why a plain, heavily worn band with a visible yellow ghost can price out ahead of a piece with a flawless rhodium shine but a lower actual karat stamped inside. Brightness photographs well. It does not weigh anything on the scale that sets the offer.
Reading all three clues together
The yellow ghost, the texture change, and the stamp all point to the same place, the true metal hiding under a cosmetic layer. None of them need special equipment to notice, just a close look and a thumbnail dragged slowly across the surface.
Before heading in with a white gold piece, drag a thumbnail along the inner band to feel for worn patches, angle it toward a window to check for that faint yellow crescent, and read the stamp with a loupe or phone camera zoomed in tight. Weigh the piece on any kitchen scale for a rough number, then check the live spot price for the karat stamped inside before walking in. That combination tells more about the real offer than any amount of polish ever will.
