Most people assume their kitchen scale is accurate enough to weigh gold. In reality, a scale calibrated for flour and butter can be off by a full gram — and one gram of 18-karat gold is worth roughly $50 at current spot prices.

The unit hiding in plain sight
Most people weigh gold in grams and call it done. The truth is that the gold trade runs on troy ounces, and a troy ounce is 31.1 grams — not the 28.35 grams you might remember from basic math class. Your kitchen scale reads in standard grams, which is fine, but every online melt-value calculator you plug those numbers into assumes troy weight. Use the wrong conversion and your estimate is off by about 9 percent before you even start.
Why kitchen scales fail on small pieces
Actually, the scale itself is often the smaller problem. Most kitchen scales are designed for 500-gram minimums, and their precision collapses on anything lighter. A broken gold chain or a single engraved wedding band typically lands between 3 and 8 grams. Why the hallmark matters as much as the number
The weight alone tells you almost nothing without the purity stamp. A 10-karat gold band and a 22-karat gold band can weigh exactly the same and be worth completely different amounts. Most pieces carry a hallmark stamped inside the shank or on the clasp — look for 10K, 14K, 18K, 375, 585, or 750. Those numbers are the karat expressed as parts-per-thousand pure gold. In reality, any residue, moisture, or even the vibration of setting the scale down can throw the baseline off by 0.5 grams or more. Zero the scale on a flat, non-vibrating surface, wait for the display to stabilize, then lower the piece gently. Weigh it twice. If the numbers match, trust them. If they differ by more than 0.1 grams, your scale is not precise enough for gold.
