
Two Rings, One Scale: What the Stamp Says First

Two rings, two starting points

Path A: a plain engraved wedding band, scratched on the outside, with a worn stamp inside. Path B: a hollow, flashy ring with a crisp, easy-to-read stamp. Before either one touches a scale, the inside of each band already points to a rough outcome, and it is not the shiny one that wins.

The engraving on the outside of path A means nothing for value. Names, dates, and messages do not add weight or purity. What matters sits on the inside of the shank: a tiny 14K stamp, half worn from decades on a finger. Next to it sits a maker's mark, barely readable, that only means something if it matches an actual sold comp · a real past sale, not a guess. Without that match, the stamp is just a purity number, and purity is where the real math starts.
Path A's numbers before the scale confirms them
Path A weighs 6.8 grams on a jeweler's scale at a shop like A-1 Trade & Loan on Commercial Drive. Fourteen karat gold is 58.5 percent pure. Multiply the two and the ring holds close to 3.98 grams of actual gold. That number is the floor. It does not move no matter how deep the scratches run on the outside, because scratches do not touch the metal's purity.

Path B looks like the better ring at first glance. It is bright, wide, and stamped 18K in a spot that is easy to find and read. Eighteen karat gold is 75 percent pure, a real jump over path A on paper. But flip it over and tap it. The shank sounds hollow, and a loupe check shows thin walls with a visible seam where the two halves were joined. Hollow construction means most of that width is air, not gold.

Path B weighs 4.1 grams. Multiply by 75 percent purity and the gold content comes out to roughly 3.08 grams. That is less actual gold than path A, even though path B carries a higher karat stamp and looks like the more expensive ring. Size and shine created an impression the numbers do not back up once you account for the hollow shank.
When each ring actually wins
Path A wins almost every time two rings get matched purely on gold content, because weight multiplied by purity rewards solid construction over surface area. Path B can still come out ahead in one situation: when the maker's mark inside is a documented brand with real sold comps behind it, and that premium is confirmed rather than assumed. Without that confirmation, a heavy plain band beats a flashy hollow ring almost every time, stone settings aside, since a shop weighs out any stones and deducts them from the gross number before calculating either ring's melt value.
Before walking a ring in anywhere, flip it over and look for the stamp yourself, then weigh it on a kitchen scale if one is handy and check today's spot price for that purity online. Those two numbers, weight and purity, tell you almost exactly where the floor sits before anyone else's scale gets involved.
