Run a fingernail along the edge of a sealed assay card and most people feel nothing. That's the point. A factory-sealed card, the kind a one-ounce bar or wafer comes in, has a continuous ultrasonic weld around the plastic. No bubbles, no ripple, no spot where the two layers pucker apart. A real weld looks almost boring under light · flat, even, machine-perfect. The moment that seam shows a wave, a soft spot, or a faint double-line where someone re-melted the edge, the card has been opened and closed again. That single detail changes everything else that follows.

 

What is the serial number actually protecting?

Every legitimate assay card carries a serial number stamped into the metal itself, then printed again on the card backing. The two need to match, digit for digit, under a loupe. Refiners like PAMP or Valcambi tie that number to a certificate on file, and a mismatch between the stamped digits and the printed ones is the fastest way to catch a card that started life around a different bar. Wear matters here too. A bar that's spent years in a drawer will show the stamped numbers slightly softened at the edges from handling through the plastic, a dulling that a fresh forgery rarely replicates convincingly.

 

The hologram that only works at an angle

Tilt the card under a desk lamp and the security strip should shift color, usually a shimmer that moves from silver to gold to green as the angle changes. That shift comes from a microscopic diffraction pattern, not printed ink, so a photocopy or a cheap sticker just sits flat and grey no matter how the light hits it. A real strip also has a texture · a faint grid felt under a fingertip through the plastic, almost like the fine tooth of paper. Fakes tend to feel glassy smooth, because printed foil skips that microtexture entirely.

 

Why does the scale still get the final word?

Even a card that clears the weld, the serial, and the hologram check still has to meet the scale. Refiners stamp a nominal weight, but the piece inside still needs to sit within its stated tolerance on a certified scale, and this is where a place like A-1 Trade & Loan on Commercial Drive treats the card as a starting point, not a verdict. Purity and weight set the melt floor no matter how pristine the packaging looks, because a sealed card with a light bar inside is still a light bar. Reading all three clues together

One clue alone rarely settles anything. A slightly dull serial number could just mean an older card, not a fake. A hologram that shimmers correctly still needs a seam that hasn't been reworked. The pattern that actually matters is all three lining up at once: smooth weld, matched serial, angle-shifting strip, because forging all three convincingly on one card is far harder than faking any single element on its own.

Before heading anywhere with a sealed piece, hold the card flat under a bright light and tilt it slowly to watch for that color shift, then check the stamped serial against the printed one with a loupe or even a phone camera zoomed in. That thirty-second check costs nothing and tells you whether the packaging is doing its job before weight and purity take over from there.
