You press a trumpet valve down and let it pop back up, and if it moves freely, you call it fine. Actually, a valve can bounce freely and still be worn past the point of holding air, because the seal that matters happens along the sides of the valve, not at the top where your finger presses. The gap between a Monel valve and its casing is measured in thousandths of an inch. A quick press-and-release tells you almost nothing about that gap.

 

What a good valve actually does?

The real test is gravity, not speed. Pull each valve most of the way out, then let it drop back into its casing under its own weight, with no spring attached. A healthy valve sinks slowly, cushioned by trapped air, and lands with a soft thud after a second or two. A worn valve drops fast and clatters, because the air seal that should slow it down has already failed. Trumpet players call this the drop test, and it costs nothing but ten seconds per valve.

 

Why dents get blamed for everything?

A dented valve casing gets blamed for problems it did not cause. A visible dent looks dramatic, so buyers assume it explains the sticking. The truth is a valve can look flawless on the outside and still leak badly inside, and a casing can carry a small dent and still seal perfectly. The stamped numbers nobody checks

Here is the detail almost nobody knows: each valve is stamped with a small number, usually one, two, or three, and that number has to match the same number stamped on its casing. Valves are hand-fitted at the factory, so a valve dropped into the wrong slot never seals the same way again, even if it looks identical. If someone rebuilt the trumpet after cleaning and mixed up the order, no amount of oil will fix it. Pull each valve halfway and check the number against the casing before you worry about anything else.

 

The wiggle nobody thinks to try

Lateral play matters as much as vertical drop. Hold a valve by the top and gently rock it side to side while it sits in the casing. A tiny bit of give is normal. A loose, sloppy wobble means the guide, the small key at the bottom that keeps the valve rotating correctly, has worn down. That wobble translates into air leaking past the valve exactly when you need it sealed, and it explains stuffy notes that oil never fixes.

Run the drop test on all three valves before anything else. If they sink slow and land soft, check the stamped numbers match their casings, then wipe the valves clean and set them back exactly where they came from. That single check, done in under a minute with zero tools, tells you more about a used trumpet than any amount of shining brass ever will.
