
The Tiny Screw Holes That Expose a Guitar's Tuner Swap

The extra hole nobody drilled on purpose

Tilt a Stratocaster headstock under raking light, the kind that hits low and throws every bump into shadow. Around each tuner post, the wood should show one clean screw hole per side, maybe two if the tuner uses a mounting tab. A guitar with a tuner swap often carries a faint second hole, plugged with wood filler or left bare, half a millimeter off from the one in use. That ghost hole is a fingerprint. It says a different tuner, with a different screw spacing, lived there first, and somebody swapped it out without matching the original footprint.
The finish halo that gives away a repaint
Original tuners leave a thin ring of untouched lacquer or paint around their base, protected for decades from sun and cleaning polish. Pull a replacement tuner and that ring often sits slightly outside the new hardware's footprint, a pale halo peeking out from under the collar. A guitar with honest, unmolested tuners shows no halo at all, because nothing ever moved. When a Stratocaster comes across the felt at A-1 Trade & Loan on Commercial Drive, that halo gets checked before anything else, because it answers the swap question in under a second, no tools required.
Nut slots that don't match the tuner spacing
String pull angle tells its own story. Original tuner sets are spaced to match the nut slot width, so each string runs in a nearly straight line from nut to post. Swap in aftermarket tuners with a different post diameter or spacing, and the string angles sharply right after the nut - that sharp angle chews a visible groove into one side of the slot faster than the other. A nut with lopsided wear, shinier and deeper on one edge than the other, is quietly confessing that the tuners doing the pulling today aren't the ones that broke the guitar in.
Why the swap matters more than the shine
A replaced tuner rarely hurts playability. Cheap tuners still hold pitch fine for casual playing, and plenty of players upgrade tuners on purpose for smoother turning. But a matching-numbers instrument, one where the hardware, pickups, and body all trace back to factory spec, sells like a small piece of proof. It tells a buyer nothing was quietly cannibalized or patched with parts-bin leftovers. Cosmetic wear - a scratched pickguard, a faded finish - barely dents that story. A tuner swap does, because it's a structural fact, not a surface one.
Reading all three clues together
One clue alone can mislead. A stray screw hole might be a factory quirk from a running change in production. A finish halo could be sun fading, not hardware history. But when the ghost hole, the halo, and the lopsided nut wear all point the same direction, the case closes itself. That combination is what separates a guitar worth pricing at full original value from one priced as a solid player with modern hardware - still fair, just different.
What to do before you bring it in
Grab a phone flashlight, hold it low across the headstock, and look for that pale halo ring around each tuner base. Check the nut slots for uneven shine on one side. Then look up your exact model and year on Reverb sold listings to see what original-hardware examples are fetching, and bring the case - a guitar with its original case tells its own honesty story before anyone touches the strings.
