Look at the battery contacts on a cordless drill before anything else. A faint green or white crust on those two metal strips means moisture got in at some point, even if the drill still spins fine on the bench. That crust is corrosion, a chemical reaction between metal and air that eats conductivity over time. A drill with clean, bright contacts has probably lived indoors its whole life. One with crusted contacts has a story, and that story usually ends with a battery that dies faster than it should.

 

What the chuck jaws are hiding

The chuck is the metal collar that grips the drill bit, and its jaws tell a quieter story than the trigger does. Even wear across all three jaws means someone used a mix of bit sizes over years, normal and expected. But a chuck with one jaw worn shiny and the other two dull usually means the drill got dropped, or forced sideways under load. That kind of stress travels up into the gearbox. The drill might still bite into wood right now, but a chuck like that is a warning that the internals took a hit nobody logged anywhere.

 

The sound a healthy motor never makes

Squeeze the trigger and listen past the whir. A clean motor hums at one steady pitch. A motor with worn brushes, the small carbon blocks that carry electricity to the spinning part, throws off a faint crackle or a burnt-toast smell, especially right after it stops. That smell is ozone, created when electricity arcs across a gap it shouldn't be crossing. A drill can run for another hundred hours with that smell present. It can also die in the next ten minutes. Reading the trigger's feel

Pull the trigger slowly and pay attention to where the resistance sits. A trigger that ramps up power smoothly from a soft squeeze to full speed still has a working speed control chip inside. A trigger that jumps straight from off to full power, with nothing in between, has a control chip on its way out. That flaw rarely shows up in a five-second test squeeze. It shows up on a job site an hour later, which is exactly the kind of failure that turns a working tool into a return.

 

Turning three clues into one number

Each of these tells maps onto something specific: corrosion suggests shorter remaining battery life, uneven chuck wear suggests gearbox stress, motor smell suggests unpredictable lifespan, and trigger feel suggests the electronics underneath. None of them alone kills a deal. Together, they shift how fast a shop can resell the tool with confidence, and how much testing time it takes to find out what's actually wrong.
