Pull the SIM tray on almost any modern phone and there's a tiny white circle tucked in the slot, smaller than a sesame seed. That circle is a water indicator, a sticker soaked in a chemical that turns pink or red the moment moisture touches it. Splash it for two seconds pulling it out of a puddle and that dot remembers forever. It doesn't fade back to white once the phone dries out. A phone can look perfect, power on, run smooth, and still carry that one pink dot as a permanent confession.

 

What does the pink dot actually predict?

A triggered indicator doesn't mean the phone is dead. It means moisture reached the internal frame, and moisture leaves a trail even after everything appears to work. Corrosion is slow. A phone that got briefly dunked six months ago can still power on today and fail in three weeks, when a trace of oxidation eats through a hairline circuit trace near the charging port. That delay is exactly why the sticker matters more than whether the screen currently lights up.

 

The greenish tinge inside the charging port

Angle a flashlight into the charging port and look at the metal pins. Clean pins catch the light with a flat silver shine, almost mirror-like. Corroded pins look dull, sometimes with a faint green or brown crust clinging to the edges like rust on a bike chain left out in the rain. That crust is copper oxide, and it's a slower, quieter cousin of the pink dot. It shows up even on phones whose SIM sticker somehow stayed white, because moisture doesn't always travel the same path through the housing.

 

Rainbow spots hiding under the glass

Tilt the screen at a low angle under bright light and look for faint rainbow or oil-slick patterns near the edges, especially by the earpiece speaker. That iridescent shimmer is moisture trapped between the display layers, refracting light like a soap bubble. It's easy to miss head-on and obvious at a 30-degree tilt. A phone with this pattern usually shows the pink dot too, but not always, which is why a single test never tells the whole story on its own.

 

Reading all three together

One clue alone can mislead. A pink dot with clean pins and a spotless screen might mean a quick splash that never reached the board. But a triggered dot plus a corroded port plus a rainbow shimmer under the glass tells a different story, one where water sat somewhere for a while. That combination changes how a phone gets priced at a counter, and it's part of why a staff member at A-1 Trade & Loan on Commercial Drive checks the tray before ever touching the battery health screen. Water history and battery percentage both shape value, but water history predicts problems that haven't happened yet.

 

Why does this matter more than a dead pixel?

A cracked corner or a dead pixel is a known, fixed cost. Water exposure is a moving target, because corrosion keeps spreading quietly after the phone leaves the counter. That uncertainty is worth more to the price than almost any cosmetic flaw, since a scratch stays a scratch but a damp circuit board doesn't stay the same for long.

Before heading anywhere to sell or pawn a phone, pop the SIM tray and check that little dot under good light, shine a flashlight into the charging port for any green tinge, and take a screenshot of the battery health percentage in settings while it's still handy.
