You play one song through a used mixer, hear no problems, and assume the mixer is fine. Actually, that test proves almost nothing, because a song masks the exact noise you're trying to catch. A snare hit or a bass line covers hiss, hum, and crackle the same way a loud room covers a whisper.
What a noisy preamp actually sounds like
