Why does everyone assume a hum means the amp is dying?

What does that buzz actually mean?
Hum almost always traces back to filter capacitors, small components that smooth out electrical current inside the amp. These parts dry out over decades whether the amp gets played or not. A hum that appears only at higher volume points to a simple fix. A hum paired with a rattling or crackling speaker points to something structural, and that difference is what actually moves the number on the price tag, not the noise itself.
