The flashlight trick sellers hate

A lens can look spotless under the flat lights of a shop counter and still be hiding something. Store lighting is diffuse, and diffuse light doesn't cast shadows. Fungus loves that kind of light because it hides inside the glass elements like a shadow with nowhere to fall. Point a small flashlight through the barrel at a sharp angle, from the side rather than straight through, and the picture changes fast. What looked clean turns into thin branching lines, almost like a spiderweb pressed under glass. That's fungus, and it isn't cosmetic. It etches the coating on the glass permanently, and it spreads if the lens sits in a damp closet next to its siblings.
Haze and fungus are not twins
People use the words interchangeably, and that mix-up costs money. Haze is a fine film, usually oil that migrated off the aperture blades and settled on the elements. It softens contrast and adds a slight glow to backlit shots, but it's often solvable with a proper cleaning. Fungus is biological. It isn't a film, it's actual growth, and it eats into the coating the way ivy eats into brick. A lens with mild haze can bounce back close to full value once cleaned. A lens with fungus keeps losing ground even after a professional wipes it down, because the etch marks stay behind.
What autofocus hunting really means
Mount the lens on a body and point it at something with texture, a bookshelf or a brick wall works fine. Half press the shutter and watch what happens before focus locks. A healthy lens moves once, maybe twice, and settles with a quiet click. A lens with a failing focus motor hunts back and forth, overshoots, and sometimes gives up entirely in low light. That hunting is the tell a repair shop would quote real money for, and plenty of sellers either skip the test or don't mention it. The rattle that means nothing
Turn the lens off, give it a gentle shake, and listen. Some lenses produce a soft, almost sandy rattle, and people assume that means something is loose or broken. On a lot of stabilized lenses, that light rattle is the floating stabilization unit doing exactly what it's built to do while it's powered down. It only locks into place once the camera turns on and the gyroscope engages. What matters is what happens once you mount the lens and power it up. If the viewfinder image still shakes and drifts with stabilization switched on, or there's a sharp metallic clack instead of a soft settle, that's a stabilization unit that failed.
One test before any offer
Before asking anyone for a number, bring the lens into daylight, remove both caps, and look straight through the barrel toward a bright window instead of a lamp. Sunlight is directional in a way indoor bulbs rarely match, and it will show haze as a soft fog and fungus as fine threads within seconds. Done that way in daylight, it tells you more in five seconds than any glance at the outside of the barrel ever will.
