A cymbal stand either gets tested loaded, with a cymbal mounted and the boom arm extended, or it gets tested bare, folded flat like it's already in the case. Those two paths give completely different pictures of the same stand. Only one of them tells you the truth.

What tips the decision

Unloaded, almost every stand looks fine. The tripod legs lock, the felt washers sit straight, the wingnuts snug down without stripping. Weight changes everything. Extend the boom arm out and rest a cymbal on it, and a stand with hidden wear will drop half an inch at the joint or lean off center within seconds. That sag lives in the telescoping tube, where the inner sleeve has worn thin from years of height adjustments. You cannot see that wear. You can only feel it once gravity gets involved.

Loaded testing wins almost every time, and it is not close. A straight stand with no boom arm can sometimes get away with a bare check, since there is less leverage working against the joints.
